Joshoji is Rinzai Buddhism Temple located in Okuwa, Nagano Prefecture. It is the oldest temple of three major temples in Kiso. It was establieshed in the late 14th century by priest Suoku.
Sanmon Gate, Kuri and the main Hall are constructed late 16th century and registered as the important caltural assets. The study has transom windows with delicte openwork; especially the crosspieces between vertical frames and the diamond-shaped latticework are simple yet beautiful. The wall painting of one thousand cranes is quite old, and it has a deep religious meaning.
The scroll was painted during the Yuan Dyasty in China, and is the only one remaining in Japan.
It is also enshrines Hotei of Kiso 7 lucky gods.
