Kamikura Shrine

Travel Information

Kamikura Shrine (神倉神社) is one of the oldest shrine in Japan. It is located on Mt. Kamikura in Shingu Wakayama Prefecture. It is very old shrine as it appears in Japanese Myth. In Japanese Myth, the first Emperor Jimmu received the divine sword on the top of Mt. Kamikura. With the sword, he succeeded his conquer. The stone stairs were donated by Minamoto no Yoritomo. It was highly respected by many people for the faith of Kumano. It is registered as UNESCO World Heritage Site.

There are 538 Steps and they are very high-slope, so be careful.

The legend said, the rock of this mountain is Ameno Iwatate that appears in Nihonshoki, the Japanese Myth. This is also considered as the sacred location where gods of Kumano appear.
