Yamamiya Sengen Shrine is said to be the location where Mt. Fuji itself is enshrined as a deity. It became known as "Yamamiya" with the transfer of the shrine to the present day Fujisan Hongu Sengen Taisya Shrine as God Asama-no-Okami. This is thought to be the oldest shrine among all the worship sites of God of Mt. Fuji.
There is no inner shrine within its precincts, but there is a spot to worship Mt. Fuji directly. Rituals and religious occasions from ancient times still take place today. It is unknown when the shrine was built. According to the Shrine's historical documents, Asama-no-Okami was enshrined at the foot of the mountain and after that it is believed that Yamatotakeru no Mikoto, a legendary prince, transferred God into Yamamiya.
In old times, Yamamiya Goshinko festival was held on the day before the grand festivals for spring and autumn at Fujisan Hongu Sengen Taisya. Asama-no-Okami visited Yamamiya through the path which was used at the festival. This was called Goshinkodo road and had 5450m and stone monuments every 109m. Today, only 4 monuments remain.
In honor of the former Yamamiya Goshinko festival, there are festivals every year such as Hatsusarusai in April and the annual October festival.
