Oyashirazu (親不知) is one of the scenic beauty spots located in Itoigawa, Niigata prefecture. It is chosen as one of 100 best ways of Japan. From the cliff has a great view of the sea of Japan. The famous Haiku Master Basho visited this place and wrote the poem.

Oyashirazu
Oyashirazu is the small cape and cliff that have a great view of the sea of Japan located in Niigata Prefecture. The name "Oyashirazu" literalley means "parents don't know" and is said to come from the dangerous shoreline below where travelers had to dash amongst ferocious waves, affording even parents no time to look back after their children.

There is an old brick tunnel was constructed about 100 years ago.

Matsuo Basho
While writing his famous travelogue Oku no Hosomichi, The Narrow Road to the Interior, renowned 17th-century poet Matsuo Basho made the journey through Oyashirazu and stayed at an inn called Kikyo-ya in Ichiburi. At the inn, he wrote about the perilous crossing and penned a now-famous haiku: Hitsuya ni Yuujo mo netari Hagi to tsuki(Under the same roof, Prostitutes also sleep, Clover and the moon.).
