Shibata Castle

Shibata Castle (新発田城) is a flatland castle located in Niigata. It was built in early Kamakura period by Shibata clan. It is chosen as 100 best Japanese castle. The gate and 2nd Yagura is the original constructions and a huge moat also preserved in original condition. Yagura has Namako wall that is very strong structure for cold weather and snow.

Shibata Castle

Type: Flatland
Built in: Kamakura period by Shibata clan.
Class: Ruins

Shibata Castle is only castle that remains the structure of Edo period. It was constructed during Kamakura pie rod by Shibata clan.

In 1581, Shibata Shigeie revolted to his lord Uesugi Kenshin, and defeated by Uesugi Kagekatsu in 1587. Shibata Clan was abandoned.

In 1597, Mizoguchi Hidekatsu was moved to this castle with 60,000 Koku. He decided to re-construct the Shibata castle for the government office for Shibata domain. The 3rd load of Shibata domain, Nobunao finished the construction of this castle.
