Jodogahama Beach
Jodogahama Beach, a scenic gem of Sanriku Fukko National Park, is a nationally designated Place of Scenic Beauty and of the 100 best swimming beaches in Japan. It is believed that Jodogahama, means "the Pure Land Beach," was named by a Buddhist priest of Joanji temple about 300 years ago. Mt. Usukiyama, where is a famous spot for cherry blossom in the spring, and five viewing platforms are located around Jodogahama. The area also offers outstanding opportunities: nature walk, boating, and sightseeing cruise.

The distinctive natural beauty of Jodogahama Beach is created by features such as the rounded cape, the patterned bare white rocks, the white stones of the beach and the peninsula along which extend sharp mountains peaks. How was such scenery created? IN the Paleogene period 52 million years ago, magma rose up close to the earth's surface. This magma penetrated cracks in the rock layers in the area and pushed the earth upwards in a rounded shape. It created around cape called a laccolith, which resembles the rounded rice cakes offered at Shinto altars. Also, their white stones and bare white rocks are rhyolite, a volcanic rock which contains an abundance of silica, and they have been eroded by the waves over many years.
