The Ruins of Nagoya Castle (名護屋城) is an important castle site that still holds the remains of the early modern Japanese distinctive features located in Karatsu, Saga Prefecture. It was constructed in 1591 by Toyotomi Hideyoshi for attacking Korea after he conqured Japan. It was the second largest castle beside Osaka Castle at that time. It is designated as the Special Historical Landmark of Japan and chosen as one of the 100 best Japanese castles. Today, it has still stone walls, moats and baileys remaining in great condition.

The Ruins of Nagoya Castle

Nagoya Castle is a hill top castle located in Karatsu, Saga Prefecture. It was built by Toyotomi Hideyoshi in 1591 for attacking Korea. Hideyoshi built this castle with in five month and it became the 2nd largest castle in Japan at that time. Kuroda Kambei Yoshitaka designed this castle, and actual construction was managed by Kato Kiyomasa, Kuroda Nagamasa and Konishi Yukinaga. Over 100,000 soldiers stayed in this castle. It was abandoned in 1598 after the death of Hideyoshi.

In the center of the castle, Honmaru (the main bailey)is located on the uppermost level. 2nd bailey and 3rd bailey and other bailey surround Honmaru on the middle level of the hill. Then, other baileys surround them on the lower level. There are six gates.

The stone walls are still remaining in the great conditions.

Tenshu Tower
was used to be about 25m to 30m tall. It has a great view of Genaki Sea and Korean Peninsula far away.

Horse Road
is 100m long and 15m wide and used for training horses. Also, there is 12m tall stone walls.
